On July 4, 1947, the Indian Independence Act was presented to the British House of Commons. The act presented a plan that would divide British India into two independent countries, India and Pakistan.

US Supreme Court ruled against quotas in university admissions

On June 28, 1978, the US Supreme Court ruled in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke that quota systems could not be used in university admissions, although programs giving advantage to minorities were constitutionally permissible.
