I will never forget the eloquent and fervent speech Professor Hibbitts gave to my 1L class on the first day of orientation calling all of us to join JURIST and be part of the unique online publication that provides coverage of legal news and commentary from around the world. After the second day of orientation, I was already overwhelmed from being exposed to an entirely new way of thinking and questioning why I choose to go law school. The energy from Professor Hibbitts’ speech, however, stuck with me. Not knowing to what end, I knew I had to be a part of JURIST.

I applied to be a member of Dateline, JURIST’s Student Commentary section, because I enjoy working with my peers and I wanted to be part of sharing other law students’ thoughts and experiences. Over a year later, I am still excited to be in law school and I love being a member of JURIST. Almost every day, members of Dateline reach out to students across the world and solicit commentary about relevant legal issues or commentary concerning students’ legal interests and experiences. JURIST provides a platform not just for providing legal news, but also for allowing people to participate, oftentimes for the first time, in the discussion that shapes the world in which we live.

St. Ives, Paris student of the civil law, advocate of the poor, and patron saint of lawyers died on May 19, 1303.

Mexico ratifies Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo

On May 19, 1848, Mexico ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. The treaty ended the Mexican-American War and ceded roughly half of Mexico's territory to the United States. Learn more about the Mexican-American War from the US Library of Congress.
