India top court throws out corruption suit against PM

India’s Supreme Court [official website] threw out a corruption case on Wednesday against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The case against Modi was brought by Common Cause [advocacy website], a human rights organization, last November and alleged [case profile] that Modi had received cash payments from companies totaling at least 400 million rupees ($5.9 million) in late 2013 and early 2014. The court dismissed the case due to a lack of evidence [Reuters report].

Last November the Indian Supreme Court declined to stay the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes that had been initiated by the Indian government [JURIST report]. The request for a stay came days after Modi announced that these high denomination bills will no longer be legal tender as of midnight on November 9, declaring a “decisive war” against corruption and black money.
