US interrogator demoted for assaulting Afghan prisoner

[JURIST] US Army interrogator Sgt. Selena Salcedo was demoted Thursday after pleading guilty to charges [JURIST report] of dereliction of duty and assault of an Afghan prisoner during questioning. The prisoner, Dilawar [Wikipedia backgrounder and profile], was being held at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan and Salcedo admitted to grabbing his head, kicking him and repeatedly making him sit against a wall despite his complaints of knee pains. Salcedo's pay will be docked $250 during the next four months and her rank is now reduced to a corporal. She avoided the year in prison or discharge that she could have received and military prosecutors dropped two related charges against her. Several other soldiers have also been charged with beating Dilawar for five days in 2002, after which he died. AP has more.
