Sniper attacks Texas ICE facility amid soaring tensions over US immigration

A sniper opened fire at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas, Texas, Wednesday morning, killing one and injuring two others before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

According to Dallas police, the gunman, who had yet to be identified as of the time of writing, fired shots from an elevated position on a building nearby the detention facility. According to local news reports, all three victims were detainees. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed no law enforcement officers were injured, and suggested he believed the motive was political:

While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical [sic] motive behind this attack… One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase ‘ANTI ICE.’

The incident underscores deep divisions over Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies, which have dramatically expanded deportations and raids across the country. The crackdown has galvanized both supporters who view it as fulfilling campaign promises on border security and opponents who denounce the operations as inhumane, creating sharp fault lines within communities nationwide. Pew Research found last month that 72% of Republicans hold favorable views of ICE, compared to only 13% of Democrats.

The shooting comes amid heightened tension following the September 10 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, an act of grisly political violence that has spurred soul-searching about American political discourse, bipartisan calls for unity, and a House resolution condemning political extremism.

Following Wednesday’s shooting, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pointed blame for the incident on rhetoric from the far-left:

For months, we’ve been warning politicians and the media to tone down their rhetoric about ICE law enforcement before someone was killed. These horrendous killings must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about ICE has consequences. Comparing ICE Day-in and day-out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences.
