Cornell University president says school ‘must do better’ in face of sexual assault allegations

President of Cornell University, Michael I. Kotlikoff said Saturday that the school “must do better” in addressing sexual assault allegations, responding in a video statement to the 2024 experiences of an individual known as “Jane Doe.”

In an eight-minute video statement released on October 3, President Kotlikoff described the past week as “one of the most difficult weeks” in Cornell’s history, expressing that what happened to Jane Doe was “deeply disturbing.”

Jane Doe was 20-years-old when she reported to the Cornell University police that 7 men from the Chi Phi fraternity sexually assaulted her in an incident involving the use of alcohol and ketamine on October 19, 2024. Jane Doe reported the assault to the university police who investigated, but no charges were filed. Last month, Jane Doe filed a civil lawsuit against the university, arguing that Cornell failed to protect her or adequately punish the men involved.

President Kotlikoff stands by the investigative procedures of Cornell. In his statement, he expresses that the school will continue to do their part in fostering a culture where sexual assault is “inexcusable.” He vows to ensure that there is an understanding of informed consent on the campus. The Ivy League university welcomes a review of their investigative conduct by an independent law firm in the coming weeks.

The criminal investigation is being taken over by New York State Attorney General Letitia James as Special Prosecutor. In criminal trials for sexual assault, a victim does not have their own lawyer. A prosecutor represents state interests, not the individual victim personally. The role of a Special Prosecutor is to represent therefore, the people of New York to independently investigate the 2024 allegations, evaluate the evidence and determine whether to bring criminal charges before a grand jury.

Jane Doe retains her own private counsel in a separate civil lawsuit. Thomas Giuffra, who represents Jane Doe, has since made public that both Doe and himself have been the subject of many threats pushing for the withdrawal of her lawsuit, prompting intense media support.

President Kotlikoff expresses that, as leaders, Cornell University has a duty to create an environment where individuals who have experienced sexual assault feel safe coming forward.

Cornell University promises to move forward with as much transparency as allowed within “legal and privacy limits,” creating spaces for conversation between the university, board leadership and the general public.
