Several protesters detained in New York City during anti-war demonstration

Several protesters were detained in New York City on Monday in a demonstration protesting US military support of Israel during the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Anti-war group Jewish Voice for Peace said police detained over 90 demonstrators. New York City police released a statement saying there were “multiple” arrests but did not provide an exact number. Among reported arrested protesters was Chelsea Manning, former Army solider and controversial figure in the case against WikiLeaks leader Julian Assange.

Demonstrators gathered in front of the offices of US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, holding signs that read “fund people, not bombs” and “No war, No ICE, Free Palestine,” while chanting “stop the bombs, end the killing, fight…for the living.”

New York City has seen several recent political protests in response to US-backing of Israel in its war with Iran. On February 19, a demonstration led by anti-Israel group Pal-Awda against the Getter Group, a real estate agency involved with property purchases in Israel and, allegedly, the occupied West Bank,, ended in violence, as police separated members from anti-Israel groups and pro-Israel groups after fights broke out.

The protests spring in part from the sustained attack on Iran by the US and Israel launched February 28. Following his return to office, US President Donald Trump instituted the largest US military build-up in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Recently, Israeli airstrikes targeted Lebanon in an attempt to eradicate the political and militant group Hezbollah.
