Press group urges Türkiye to investigate motives behind journalist shooting

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) urged Turkish authorities Wednesday to investigate the recent shooting of a journalist for possible motives and links to the victim’s work.

Nafiz Koca was shot in the leg with a shotgun outside one of two newspapers he owns. The attack, captured on video, shows the assailant immediately flee the scene. Police launched a large-scale investigation and captured a suspect on Thursday. Koca is now safe, and his injury was not life-threatening.

The group expressed concern  that the assault may have been linked to the journalist’s work, though the reason for the shooting remains unclear. CPJ’s Turkish representative stated that,“The shooting of Günışığı and Yeni Ufuk publisher Nafiz Koca in Elazığ requires a comprehensive investigation to determine the motive behind the assault.”

Koca is a well-known journalist and publisher who reports on civil and environmental issues with a focus on strengthening local press and community ties in Elazığ. He owns two newspapers, Günışığı Gazetesi and Yeni Ufuk Gazetesi.

Suspicion that the attack related to Koca’s work springs in part from Türkiye‘s history of violence against the press, which has drawn condemnation from CPJ and European Court of Human Rights. Press groups claim the nation has arbitrarily arrested journalists and violated freedom of expression protections of articles 5 and 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights.
