Trump extends deadline for nationwide TikTok ban another 90 days

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday pushing back the ban on the social media app TikTok another 90 days.

The White House said the purpose of the order is to prevent the Department of Justice from enforcing the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. Congress passed the act on April 24, 2024, restricting the use of apps in the US that are controlled by foreign adversaries, specifically naming TikTok as one of those apps. Lawmakers expressed concern that the app would be used to spy on or influence American users.

The order, entitled “Further Extending the TikTok Enforcement Delay,” is the third executive order Trump has passed extending the deadline on the ban. The first was signed on Trump’s first day in office, just three days after the US Supreme Court upheld the act. The second was 90 days later, on April 4.

The passage of the act received immense pushback from TikTok users and civil libertarians. Trump has expressed through his three executive orders that he wants to give the owner, the China-based company ByteDance, the ability to find an American buyer. Just before the April 4 extension, ByteDance seemed close to a deal with an American company, but this potential sale was halted after Trump announced his tariff plans for the US.

TikTok is used by 170 million Americans and around 7.5 million American businesses. ByteDance now has until September 17, 2025, to find a US buyer. If the company does not find a US buyer for TikTok, the app may be banned in the US.
