NewsThe Trump administration on Friday announced a Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) to fight “gender ideology” in school programs and activities. Title IX is a federal law from the Education Amendments of 1972 that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity that receives federal funds.
The Title IX SIT is designed to streamline Title IX investigations. It will be composed of attorneys, investigators, and case workers from the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, the Department of Education, and the Federal Student Aid Enforcement.
Trump established his transgender policy through Executive Order (EO) 14201 and Executive Order (EO) 14168. EO 14201 required female athletic opportunities and locker rooms of educational institutions to be reserved for biological females and to cut funding to educational programs that do not comply. EO 14168 required cutting any federal funds used to “promote gender ideology,” and ensuring that “intimate spaces designated for women, girls, or females (or for men, boys, or males) are designated by sex and not identity.” The order additionally mandated that every agency must interpret gender terminology as biological sex terminology for all “statutes, regulations, or guidance” and remove official government communications that “promote or otherwise inculcate gender ideology.”
EO 14168 stated in its purpose section:
Across the country, ideologues who deny the biological reality of sex have increasingly used legal and other socially coercive means to permit men to self-identify as women and gain access to intimate single-sex spaces and activities designed for women, from women’s domestic abuse shelters to women’s workplace showers. This is wrong. Efforts to eradicate the biological reality of sex fundamentally attack women by depriving them of their dignity, safety, and well-being.
Secretary of Education Linda McMahon shared:
Traditionally, our Office for Civil Rights (OCR) takes months, even years, to complete Title IX investigations. OCR under this Administration has moved faster than it ever has, and the Title IX SIT will ensure even more rapid and consistent investigations. To all the entities that continue to allow men to compete in women’s sports and use women’s intimate facilities: there’s a new sheriff in town. We will not allow you to get away with denying women’s civil rights any longer.
Trump previously declared his intention to end the current transgender policies in December 2024 at one of his major rallies. His creation of the Title IX SIT is one of many policies launched to combat existing sex/gender policies in the US. During his three months in office, he issued presidential orders banning transgender people from entering the military, blocking gender-affirming care from reaching transgender prisoners, cutting funds to gender-affirming care for minors, and cutting funds from projects deemed to “promote gender ideology.”
