Riots broke out on Monday evening in the Nieuw-West suburb of Amsterdam in the Netherlands over tensions surrounding a soccer match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv in which locals clashed with Israeli supporters.
This is the second rioting incident in two weeks in Amsterdam and is said to be characterized by antisemitic violence targeting Israeli fans both before and after the game. During the incident, a tram was reportedly set on fire and several automobiles were damaged in stone pelting.
Monday’s riots began after a week of escalating tensions in Amsterdam and prior to the riots, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema had implemented several measures in an emergency ordinance including a three day ban on demonstrations, granting the police stop and search powers and a declaration of several areas as risk zones as they grappled with maintaining public order amid escalating tensions.
This comes in the wake of a noted rise in antisemitism globally following the October 7 Hamas attacks. In May, a synagogue in Poland was targeted with Molotov cocktails and a report from February showed antisemitic incidents in the UK at an all-time high. A November 2023 report found that antisemitism incidents had more than quadrupled in Germany since the start of the war in Gaza. Reports also showed a similar rise in such incidents in France and Belgium. Further, US university campuses have witnessed tensions, and a formal investigation was opened into Penn, Harvard, and MIT’s response to antisemitism on their campuses in December 2023.
