DRC opposition leaders call for protests ahead of presidential inauguration

Three opposition candidates in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) December presidential election, Martin Fayulu, Moise Katumbi and Floribert Anzuluni, called for a protest Saturday, when President Felix Tshisekedi is to be sworn in for a second term, in a joint video press conference.

The December election was marred by allegations of fraud, logistical shortcomings and disruptions. It was extended into a second day due to poll closures and voting machine malfunctions. Despite the disruptions, the electoral commission (CENI) announced that the election ended with Tshisekedi receiving over 70 percent of the vote, Katumbi receiving 18 percent and Martin Fayulu receiving just over 5 percent. Both Katumbi and Fayulu have rejected the results and demanded the cancellation of the “sham” election. However, the constitutional court of the DRC rejected the petitions challenging the provisional results and officially confirmed Tshisekedi as president of the country on January 10.

Notably, five opposition candidates, including Fayulu and Katumbi, had attempted to organize protests in Kinshasa against the CENI on December 26 following the election, but the protests were banned by the DRC.  An EU report issued on Monday alleged the CENI has misappropriated $400 million in state funds. The National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), which ran the largest election observation mission in the DRC, also issued a statement on Thursday, saying the election was a “catastrophe” and called on the CENI to question its role in the situation.

President Tshisekedi’s inauguration day is set for Saturday, January 20.
