Sikh separatist arrested in India after month-long manhunt

Indian police arrested Monday Sikh separatist Amritpal Singh after a month-long manhunt. According to police, Singh has been on the run since March 2023. He is charged him with attempted murder, obstructing law enforcement and agitating the peace.

Singh gained notoriety for supporting the Khalistan movement, which calls for the establishment of an independent Sikh homeland. Authorities believed Singh was hiding in the northwest state of Punjab.

He was taken into custody in the village gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship, in accordance with the National Security Act (NSA), which permits anybody deemed a threat to the country’s security to be detained without charge for up to a year. Authorities searched for the suspect with tens of thousands of officers and shut down mobile internet in Punjab, a state with 30 million residents, for days. The shutdown is just one example of what Legal Service India called a “very common practice for law enforcement agencies.”
