Trump negotiating surrender after becoming first ex-US president to face criminal charges

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Thursday that his office had contacted the attorney of former US President Donald Trump to coordinate his surrender following the first grand jury indictment of an ex-president in the country’s history.

“This evening we contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.’s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal. Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected,” Bragg’s office Tweeted Thursday evening.

The indictment remains under seal per Bragg’s announcement, but the charges are broadly reported to be related to hush money allegedly paid out to an adult entertainment star leading up to Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential elections. Bragg spoke in broad terms about these allegations in an interview with MSNBC earlier this month.

Trump blasted the indictment as an “attack on our country” in a rambling social media post, arguing that the prosecution is politically motivated and aimed at sabotaging the Republican Party’s likelihood of success in the 2024 presidential elections. He wrote [sic.]:

These Thugs and Radical Left Monsters have just INDICATED the 45th President of the United States of America, and the leading Republican Candidate, by far, for the 2024 Nomination for President. THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR COUNTRY THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. IT IS LIKEWISE A CONTINUING ATTACK ON OUR ONCE FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS. THE USA IS NOW A THIRD WORLD NATION, A NATION IN SERIOUS DECLINE. SO SAD!

Bragg has denied the charges are politically motivated.

This is a developing story.
