US lawmakers hold Capitol riot remembrance events

The US House of Representatives Friday commemorated the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol with a moment of silence on its second anniversary. The ceremony drew mostly Democratic lawmakers, and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) appeared to be the only Republican in attendance.

The ceremony was led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Chaplain Margaret Grun Kibben. Jeffries ended the moment of silence saying, “May God continue to bless America.” Representatives paid particular tribute to the US Capitol Police officers who lost their lives in connection with the insurrection.

In another ceremony, President Biden recognised 12 people who played a key part in resisting the insurrection at the White House. Biden awarded 12 Presidential Citizens Medals, recognising the “citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.” These were the first of his presidency.

According to Attorney General Merrick Garland, federal authorities are pursuing a number of legal cases against Donald Trump and other January 6 participants.
