Three men sentenced to prison for plot to kidnap Michigan governor

A Michigan court Thursday sentenced three men involved in a 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to prison.

Pete Musico, Joseph Morrison and Paul Bellar were all sentenced in the Jackson County Circuit Court to separate prison terms after a jury found them guilty of felony charges in October. Musico received a 12-year sentence, Morrison received a 10-year sentence, and Bellar received seven years. All three were part of the paramilitary group Wolverine Watchmen, which conspired to kidnap Whitmer. In total, six men were charged in the conspiracy.

The FBI became aware of the conspiracy in early 2020 and charged the six men in October 2020. Musico and Morrison’s charges included false report or threat of terrorism, gang membership, support of terrorist acts and felony possession of a firearm. Bellar’s charges included support of terrorist acts, gang membership felonies and felony possession of a firearm.

Other men charged in the conspiracy included Ty Gerard Garbin, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. The Western District Court of Michigan sentenced Garbin to six years in prison in August 2021 and convicted Fox and Croft Jr. in August 2022. Fox and Croft Jr. are awaiting sentencing hearings in late December
