California man pleads not guilty to attack on US House Speaker Pelosi’s husband

David DePape Tuesday pleaded not guilty to state charges brought against him for allegedly attacking Paul Pelosi, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. DePape is charged with attempted murder, burglary, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment of an elder, and threatening a public official.

On October 28, DePape allegedly broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco at 2:30am. DePape confessed to police his desire to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage, and to break her kneecaps. Instead, he found Paul Pelosi, who called the police. DePape told the police that he did not leave after Paul Pelosi called the police because “much like the American founding fathers with the British, he was fighting against tyranny without the option of surrender.”

After confessing to the police, DePape pleaded not guilty to the state charges against him in a San Francisco court. The US Department of Justice also charged DePape with assault on the immediate family member of a federal official under 18 U.S.C. § 115(a)(1)(A) and (b) and attempted kidnapping of a federal official under 18 U.S.C. § 1201(d). If convicted, DePape faces a maximum 30 years in prison for the federal assault charge and a maximum 20 years in prison for the federal kidnapping charge. DePape also faces up to a life sentence if convicted on the state charges.
