DOJ charges California man for attack on US House Speaker Pelosi’s husband

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) Monday charged Californian David Wayne DePape with federal assault and kidnapping for allegedly attacking Paul Pelosi, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. Depape was arrested on Friday.

The DOJ’s criminal complaint details that San Francisco Dispatch received a 911 call from Mr. Pelosi who stated a male named David, who he did not know, was in his home and planned to wait for his wife, Speaker Pelosi. When law enforcement arrived at Mr. Pelosi’s home and opened the door, Mr. Pelosi and DePape “were both holding a hammer with one hand and [DePape] had his other hand holding onto Pelosi’s forearm.” Instead of dropping the hammer as requested by the police, DePaper struck Mr. Pelosi in the head with the hammer. The police recovered zip ties and DePape’s backpack from the Pelosi residence. The backpack contained, “among other things, a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal.”

During DePape’s interview with the police, he said he wanted the truth from Speaker Pelosi and “articulated he viewed Nancy as the ‘leader of the pack’ of lies told by the Democratic Party.” He explained he would “break Nancy’s kneecaps, [and] she would then have to be wheeled into Congress, which would show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions.” DePape also expressed his plan “to use Nancy to lure another individual” to him.

DePape was charged with assault on the immediate family member of a federal official under 18 U.S.C. § 115(a)(1)(A) and (b) and attempted kidnapping of a federal official under 18 U.S.C. § 1201(d). If convicted, DePapre faces a maximum 30 years in prison for the federal assault charge and a maximum 20 years in prison for the federal kidnapping charge. Speaker Pelosi released a statement on Monday thanking “everyone for their kindness” in the aftermath of the attack.
