Las Vegas man charged with murder in Southern California church shooting

The Orange County (OC) Sheriff’s Department Monday released a statement regarding a shooting at a Laguna Woods church last Saturday. Investigators announced the arrest of 68-year-old David Chou, of Las Vegas, Nevada, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after he allegedly entered Geneva Presbyterian Church “and fired multiple rounds, striking six victims.”

Members of Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church (ITPC), which has shared space with Geneva Church since 2009, were attending a lunch banquet when the shooting occured. Prior to the shooting, authorities believe the suspect secured the doors to the building with chains and filled the keyholes with superglue. The suspect was arrested at the scene when deputies arrived.

Five victims who sustained gunshot wounds were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The sixth victim, Dr. John Cheng, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dr. Cheng “sustained multiple gunshot wounds when he intervened and tackled the suspect, allowing other church members to detain the suspect” and “tie his legs with extension cords and confiscate two handguns from the suspect.”

The OC Sheriff’s Department said the shooting appeared to be “fueled by politically motivated hate” and it “was determined the suspect was upset about political tensions involving China and Taiwan.”

Authorities held a press conference Monday to discuss further details.
