UK announces 26 new sanctions on Russian defense individuals and entities

The UK Thursday announced 26 new sanctions on Russian individuals and entities who continue to support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

The reasons behind the new sanctions, according to UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, are Putin’s renewed military assault in the eastern regions of Ukraine and new intelligence which reveals Russian forces intentionally bombed critical and civilian infrastructure in Mariupol.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the UK has repeatedly imposed fresh rounds of sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for Russia’s war. With the new sanctions in place, the UK has now sanctioned over £900 billion of global assets from banks and oligarchs with a net worth of approximately £200 billion.

The new sanctions target key leaders in Russia’s army, as well as individuals and entities outside of the military who are actively supporting the war effort.

Within the military, the sanctions target Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel Azatbek Omurbekov, Commander of Airborne Forces Colonel General Andrey Serdyukov, Commander of Special Operations Forces Major General Valery Flyustikov and First Deputy Chief of the General Staff Colonel General Nikolay Bogdanovsky.

Individuals and entities outside of the military subject to the new sanctions include CEO and Chairman of Russian Railways Oleg Belozyorov and defected Ukrainian MP Ilya Kiva. The UK also fast-tracked 19 additional individual and entity sanctions to align with sanctions issued by UK allies in the G7 and EU. These sanctions include First Deputy Director of Federal Security Service of Russia Sergei Borisovich Korolyov, Russian developer and manufacturer of military equipment Kalashnikov Concern, Arzamas Machine-Building Plant, Military Industrial Company and Russia’s largest transport leasing company GTLK.

Commenting on the new sanctions, Truss said: “The UK is unyielding in our support for Ukraine and in holding Putin and his regime to account. Today’s new wave of sanctions hits the generals and defence companies that have blood on their hands.”

The UK said it plans to continue using sanctions to retaliate against Putin’s war efforts and support Ukraine.
