Canada announces new sanctions on 18 Russians and Belarusians

Canada Monday announced new sanctions against nine Russian and nine Belarusian individuals for facilitating and enabling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The new sanctions were announced after the world saw images from the city of Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv, Ukraine, this weekend. Russia has conducted bombing campaigns and ground offensives across Ukraine since its invasion on February 24. Images released from Bucha revealed brutal murders that sparked international outrage. Like Canada, the US and European allies are also preparing to announce new sanctions in response to Russia’s actions.

In a news release, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly explained how the newly sanctioned Russian and Belarusian individuals have helped further Russian President Vladimir Putin’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine. Since February 24, Canada has sanctioned more than 700 individuals and entities across Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Like the earlier sanctions, the eighteen new sanctions announced Monday will impose asset freezes and other prohibitions.

Commenting on the new sanctions, Joly said: “By enabling Vladimir Putin’s senseless invasion of Ukraine, these close collaborators of the regime are complicit in the horrific events unfolding before our eyes. Canada continues to stand with the brave people of Ukraine fighting for their freedom, and we will not stop pressuring the Russian regime until its troops have left Ukrainian soil. The atrocities must end.”

Though the list of individuals has not yet been released, Joly said the nine Russian and nine Belarusian individuals subject to the new sanctions are all close associates of the Russian and Belarusian regimes.
