Georgia poll workers sue far-right website over fraud claims

Two elections workers from Fulton County, Georgia filed a defamation lawsuit on Thursday against The Gateway Pundit, a popular far-right website that allegedly spread false accusations that the workers committed mass voter fraud. The lawsuit specifically names The Gateway Pundit’s owner Jim Hoft and his brother Joe Hoft, a contributor to the site.

Among other things, The Gateway Pundit had posted on their website on numerous occassions accusing Ms. Moss and Ms. Freeman of conspiring to empty the room where they were counting ballots of poll watchers, producing secret suitcases full of illegal ballots, and running those ballots through vote counting machines multiple times.

According to complaint, Wandrea Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman experienced months of death threats and harassment as a result of  The Gateway Pundit’s accusations. The complaint alleges that “the lies about Ms. Freeman and Ms. Moss have not only devastated their personal and professional reputations but instigated a deluge of intimidation, harassment, and threats that has forced them to change their phone numbers, delete their online accounts, and fear for their physical safety.”

The complaint further claims that The Gateway Pundit is the top outlet responsible for spreading disinformation, pointing to the fact that the website “achiev[ed] 7.2 million shares on social media of its bogus election fraud stories—far more than the social media shares for such national news sites such as The Washington Post, NBC News and NPR.”

Ms. Moss and Ms. Freeman seek a public retraction of the defendants previous statements along with nominal, compensatory and punitive damages.
