New York govenor resigns after investigation findings reveals sexual harassment

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo resigned on Monday, following an inquiry that found multiple accounts of sexual harrassment.

The 168-page report released by the New York Attorney General Office, found that Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women, including state employees. Accounts included that the governor engaged in non-consensual touching, offensive comments, “creating a hostile environment for women.”

The five-month independent investigation, led by Letitia James, comprised of speaking to 179 people and reviewing 74 000 documents. It concluded that Cuomo had committed multiple acts of sexual harassment.

In a press conference Joon Kim, an investigator, stated that Cuomo’s conduct perpetuated a culture “where you could not say ‘no’ to the governor . . . you would be written off, cast aside or worse.” Cuomo continues to deny all the claims in the report.

Sering as New York Governor since 2011, Cuomo’s resignation will be effective in 14 days. New York Democrats had begun plans to impeach Cuomo, as he still faces criminal investigations relating to sexual harassment. Statements in response to the report have highlighted the “abhorrent” nature of the Governor’s actions, and that this behavior is “unacceptable“. In the 20 minutes televised address, Cuomo said that despite denying the harassment claims, remaining in office would “paralyze state government.”
