Impeachment managers present arguments and new footage on second day of Trump trial

The second day of proceedings in the impeachment trial against former president Donald Trump concluded on Wednesday. Trump is being tried on allegations that his conduct incited the attacks on the US Capitol on January 6.

The proceedings continued after the Senate voted 56-44 that they had jurisdiction to try Trump for a second time on Tuesday. During Tuesday’s proceedings, lead impeachment manager Representative Jamie Raskin showed a video of the events that took place when rioters stormed the Capitol.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, the beginning of the actual trial against Trump, the impeachment managers showed new footage that had not previously been released. This included security footage from the US Capitol building and a graphic of the layout of the chambers to illustrate how close the rioters got to Congresspeople. It also presented a timeline to show the speed at which the insurrectionists broke past Capitol police and breached the building.

Representatives also emphasized evidence from the indictments of some of the rioters wherein the rioters stated that they would have killed Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi if they had found her and that they were seeking to hang Vice President Mike Pence for going against Trump by not challenging the election results.

The impeachment managers will continue with the prosecution’s case on Thursday by presenting further evidence illustrating the effects of the attacks on law enforcement and those within the building as well as arguments that there were calculations to the attack, not just chaos. After the managers conclude their presentation of the case, Trump’s defense team will begin.
