Federal judge blocks Texas governor’s order that limited the number of mail ballot drop boxes

US District Judge Robert Pitman ruled against an order by Texas Governor Greg Abbott limiting each county to only one mail-in ballot-return center. Abbott issued this order on October 1, and argued that reducing the number of locations to return mail-in ballots would also reduce the risk of voter fraud. This order resulted in the closure of dozens of voter drop locations throughout the state.

Those against this order argued that this was voter suppression. One such opposer was Harris County clerk Chris Hollins who said:

To force hundreds of thousands of seniors and voters with disabilities to use a single drop-off location in a county that stretches over nearly 2,000 square miles is prejudicial and dangerous

Ultimately, Pitman sided with Hollins, saying that by closing these drop off locations, they had disproportionately burdened the disabled, elderly and those in the larger counties. Pitman also stated that it is the individual county’s right to have however many voter locations it deemed necessary for its specific needs. As such, Pitman blocked the governor’s order.
