US announces sanctions on Iran judges and prisons

The US State Department announced new sanctions on Iran Thursday. The sanctions are against Judges Mohammad Soltani and Seyyed Mahmoud Sadati, who sit on the Iran Revolutionary Court, and Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, and Orumiyeh Prison in Orumiyeh City.

The judges and prisons are accused of violating Section 106 of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act of 2017 (CAATSA), which means there is evidence they have “prior incidence of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, arbitrary detentions, and denials of the right to liberty of those seeking only to practice their faith, peacefully assemble, or to express themselves.”

The sanctions against Soltani come after he was reported to be involved in the case of Navid Afkari. Afkari was a wrestler who had a promising career ahead of him when he was arrested in connection with the protests of 2018. He was accused of murder and coerced into a televised confession. He was executed, in secret, without a fair trial and after allegedly being tortured in prison.

Sadati is accused of sentencing people on “dubious charges” regarding freedom of expression or belief. The Vakilabad and Orumiyeh prisons are sanctioned for arbitrary detention and abuse of prisoners respectively.,
