Federal judge blocks US Postal Service from sending Colorado election mailer

A federal judge on Saturday temporarily blocked the US Postal Service (USPS) from sending election notices to Colorado households that state officials claimed contain “patently false information” about the 2020 election process in Colorado.

The USPS claimed that the notices help voters understand the mail-in process. However, Colorado’s secretary of state criticized the notices as an “attempt at voter suppression.”

The judge determined that such misleading information “likely interferes” with Coloradans’ “fundamental right to vote.” The misleading information may result in some Colorado voters not voting.

The temporary restraining order remains in effect until September 22. At that point, the court will determine whether to grant a preliminary injunction, further barring the mailing of the notices. However, the USPS allegedly already delivered the notices to approximately 75 percent of Colorado households.
