US executes Keith Nelson in fifth federal execution after 17-year hiatus

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday that Keith Nelson, who was convicted in 2001 of the rape and murder of 10-year-old Pamela Butler, has been executed. Nelson was pronounced dead at 4:32 PM EDT by the Vigo County Coroner.

In October 1999 Nelson told an acquaintance that he wanted to kidnap, rape, torture and kill a girl that he had seen in Kansas City, Kansas. Thereafter, Nelson parked his truck outside of Butler’s home and kidnapped her while she was rollerblading. Sometime later, Nelson raped Pamela, strangled her to death with a wire, then buried her body behind a church in Kansas City, Missouri.

In 2001, Nelson pleaded “guilty to the kidnapping and unlawful interstate transportation of a child for the purpose of sexual abuse resulting in death, and the district court, consistent with a federal jury’s recommendation, later sentenced him to death.” The conviction and sentence were both affirmed on appeal.

“More than two decades after viciously taking the life of Pamela Butler, causing untold devastation to those who loved her, Nelson finally faced the justice he deserved,” DOJ spokesperson Kerri Kupec stated in the press release. “Family members of Pamela Butler, including her mother, attended the execution and witnessed implementation of the sentence for Nelson’s horrific crime.”

Nelson’s execution marks the fifth execution since federal capital punishment resumed this year.
