Lebanon Special Tribunal postpones Hariri assassination verdict after Beirut explosion

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) announced Wednesday that it would postpone the release of the verdict in the case of four men accused of being involved in the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri “out of respect for the countless victims of the devastating explosion that shook Beirut [yesterday], and the three-day period of public mourning in Lebanon.”

The Netherlands-based court was originally scheduled to deliver a final verdict in the Ayyash et al. case on Friday, August 7. The STL Trial Chamber will now deliver its verdict on Tuesday, August 18.

The high-profile case concerns the February 2005 attack that killed the former government official and 21 others, and injured over 200 more. A procedural history of the case can be found here.

In a press release, the STL stated that it “expresses its solidarity with the Lebanese people in these difficult times.” Additionally, STL’s flag “is flying at half-mast today to honor those who lost their lives, who were wounded and who are still missing as a result of the explosion in Beirut.”
