UN sanctions Pakistan Taliban leader for al Qaeda connections

The UN Security Council ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee Thursday added Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud to its Sanctions List.

Mehsud assumed the leadership of the TTP following the death of the Mullah Fazlullah in June 2018. The group has since claimed responsibility for multiple deadly terror attacks across Pakistan, including suicide bombings that killed hundreds of civilians. Mehsud was designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) by the US State Department last September.

Mehsud has been listed pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2368 (2017), and the sanctions include asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo. The imposed sanctions are for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating or perpetrating of acts or activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf of, or in support of” entities associated with al Qaeda.
