Virginia Supreme Court temporarily suspends all evictions

Chief Justice Lemons of the Virginia Supreme Court on Monday ordered the temporary suspension of all evictions and residential unlawful detainer actions. This order comes at the request of Virginia’s governor, Ralph Northam.

In a letter to the Chief Justice, Northam requested a suspension of unlawful detainer proceedings for 30 days so that the his administration could have time to establish their comprehensive rent relief program.

Consequently, the Chief Justice modified the Declaration of Judicial Emergency in Response to COVID-19 Emergency. The modifications temporarily suspended all evictions and residential unlawful detainer actions.

The modified order took effect immediately and extends through June 28, 2020. However, under the Virginia Code, the order may be extended.
