Senate Judiciary Committee introduces bills for police reforms amid nationwide protests

Amid ongoing national protests in response to the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, members of the US Senate Judiciary Committee have introduced two bills to reform police practices. The nationwide protests have commonly pushed for reforms to police practices to prevent instances of unneccesary uses of force.

Senator Amy Klobuchar introduced one of the bills on Thursday to “incentivize banning of chokeholds and carotid holds.” The other bill was introduced by Senator Rand Paul to “prohibit no-knock warrants.”

Floyd was killed after a police officer placed a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes, thus cutting off his airway. The police officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder. Breonna Taylor is another individual recently killed by police who were issuing a “no-knock warrant” in Louisville, Kentucky. The Louisville Metro Council also unanimously banned no-knock warrants on Thursday.
