Rio de Janeiro state legislature votes unanimously to start impeachment proceedings against governor

The Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro voted unanimously on Wednesday to start impeachment proceedings against Governor Wilson Witzel. The impeachment motion, one of 14 that Witzel faced, was for alleged graft in ventilator and medical supply purchases for the COVID-19 outbreak.

Witzel has faced 14 impeachment motions based on investigations by federal police and prosecutors. On May 26, police searched Witzel’s residence as part of an investigation into allegations that he overpriced contracts for equipment and building field hospitals.

A special commission has been assigned to study the accusations against Witzel, who will continue in office unless he is impeached and removed from office.
