Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced on Friday that natural gas company Range Resources pleaded no contest to criminal charges for negligent oversight of the Brownlee and Yeager well sites in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

For two years, Shapiro led investigations to uncover potential environmental crimes in the fracking industry. The Forty-Third Statewide Investigating Grand Jury published reports documenting leaks and contamination for the Brownlee and Yeager well sites. In 2018 the Brownlee site leaked 2,000 gallons of fracking waste. Additionally, the Yeager site experienced tears in the lining of its impoundment, causing water contamination.

Range Resources pleaded no contest on the Brownlee site to one count of Disposal, Processing & Storage of Residual Waste, Unlawful Conduct under the Solid Waste Management Act and Prohibition Against Discharge of Industrial Wastes. Range Resources also pleaded no contest on the Yeager site to two counts of Disposal, Processing & Storage of Residual Waste, and Unlawful Conduct under the Solid Waste Management Act.

Overall, Range Resources will pay $50,000 in fines and contribute $100,000 to the Washington County Watershed Alliance as part of the terms of its plea.
