Atlanta police chief resigns following fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks

The Atlanta Chief of Police Erika Shields resigned Saturday following a fatal police encounter in Atlanta, in which officers shot and killed Rayshard Brooks.

Shields served as the chief of police for three years. Following her resignation, she stated:

For more than two decades, I have served alongside some of the finest men and women in the Atlanta Police Department. Out of a deep and abiding love for this City and this department, I offered to step aside as police chief. APD has my full support, and Mayor Bottoms has my support on the future direction of this department. I have faith in the Mayor, and it is time for the city to move forward and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case. They reported that officers were called to a Wendy’s restaurant in the city to respond to reports of Brooks sleeping in his car in the drive-thru. The officers and Brooks got into an altercation after Brooks failed a sobriety field test. One of the officers pulled out a taser, which Brooks grabbed and ran. As Brooks ran, he pointed the taser back at officers. One of them subsequently shot him twice in the back.

The officer was wearing a body cam but it fell off during the altercation. The medical examiner who conducted an autopsy on Brooks ruled his manner of death a homicide. The officer who did the shooting was arrested and the other was placed on administrative leave.
