Rights group urges justice for protesters killed during Sudan demonstrations

A year after violent protests ousted Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, Human Rights Watch called upon the Sudanese government Friday for justice in the deaths of dozens of demonstrators.

Al-Bashir was removed from power in a coup d’état in April 2019 after four months of protests against his administration. Pro-government police heavily repressed these protests through June, resulting in at least 77 confirmed demonstrator deaths, according to a March Amnesty International report. “We are urging Sudan’s transitional authorities to hold thorough, effective and independent investigations into all protester killings and other human rights violations,” says the report. “Every victim must get justice.”

HRW’s latest call says “the killings and abuses could qualify as crimes against humanity because they were part of a government policy of using excessive, lethal force against unarmed protesters.” The rights group has reaffirmed that the Sudanese government has not taken substantial steps into investigating the protesters’ deaths.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok met with his Council of Ministers and “stressed the need to conduct an investigation into what happened,” but noted that “what happened will not lose the revolution’s [ability] to focus on the completion of its tasks.” Another government press report says “there is a consensus on the necessity for respect of the right of peaceful demonstration and gathering,” and added “that people should wait for the outcome of the investigation committee.”

HRW has criticized Hamdok’s committee for its slow pace and a lack of transparency, and has urged sufficient protection, thoroughness, and political professionalism for its work.

Al-Bashir was charged last May for his role in violently suppressing the protests, but the new government’s committee has yet to find sufficient answers for the dozens slain in last year’s protests.
