US lawmakers propose bill to restrict goods from China over rights violations

US lawmakers on both sides of the aisle proposed a bill Wednesday, entitled the “Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act,” to restrict goods from China.

The legislation, co-sponsored by Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Representative James McGovern, would require importers to get certification from the US government stating that their goods were not produced using forced labor. The bill comes in response to reports of forced labor by Uighur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region.

This legislation would impact major corporations such as Nike and H&M, which import goods from China. The proposed bill states, “it is the policy of the United States to protect American investors, through stronger disclosure requirements, alerting them to the presence of Chinese and other companies complicit in gross violations of human rights in United States capital markets.”
