UN report: Russia has committed war crimes in Syria

The UN Commission of Inquiry said in its report on Monday that Russia is responsible for war crimes in the ongoing Syrian conflict.

The report’s findings were based on investigations conducted from July 11to January 10. According to the report, Russian aircraft was involved in two incidents of bombings in civilian areas.

The report also states that human rights violations have continued, with activists, journalists and civilians being unlawfully detained. Access to medical care for the wounded has been undermined by aerial and ground attacks of pro-government forces, while attacks on women’s and children’s hospitals have prevented pregnant women and new mothers from receiving medical care.

There were sustained international efforts to revitalize the political process in the reporting period. However, the humanitarian situation worsened in many parts of the country. In terms of ongoing hostilities, fighting between pro-government forces and armed opposition groups intensified, causing displacement of 700,000 civilians.

The report concludes with a number of recommendations for the government of the Syrian Arab Republic, parties to the conflict and the international community to improve the protection of civilians.
