Ohio and Lousiana governors among many to issue “stay at home” orders among growing COVID-19 concerns

Ohio Governor DeWine and Louisiana Governor Edwards are the most recent to issue a statewide “stay at home” order Sunday. Both states are ordering residents to stay home and only leave for essential services such as retrieving groceries or medication. These states are among multiple that have issued similar orders during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ohio’s “stay at home” order will begin at Monday 11:59 pm and last two weeks. Louisiana’s order will run from Monday at 5 pm through April 12th. Ohio Governor DeWine stressed the importance of citizens following the “stay at home” order:

We haven’t faced an enemy like we are facing today in 102 years – we are at war. In the time of war, we must make sacrifices, and I thank all of our Ohio citizens for what they are doing and what they aren’t doing. You are making a huge difference, and this difference will save lives…Right now, we are in a crucial time in this battle. What we do now will slow this invader so that our healthcare system will have time to treat those who have contracted COVID-19 and also have time to treat those who have other medical problems. Time is of the essence.

Ohio and Louisiana are not the only states to issue such orders. On Saturday, the New Jersey Governor issued a “stay at home” order that commenced at 11:59 pm that evening. Illinois announced its “stay at home” order on Friday and commenced enforcement Saturday. New York Governor Cuomo signed his “PAUSE” executive order with similar provisions Friday. Connecticut released its “stay at home” order Friday with enforcement beginning on Monday.

California and Pennsylvania were among the first states to take action. California was the first to announce a “stay at home” last Thursday. Though Pennsylvania has not officially declared a “stay at home” order, the state similarly shut down all non-essential businesses Thursday.

Many states have followed the trend of issuing “stay at home” orders during the COVID-19 outbreak. Other states will be quick to follow. Oregon’s Governor plans to announce the state’s “stay at home” order Monday.
