Chief Justice denounces Senator Schumer’s remarks about Supreme Court justices

Chief Justice John Roberts released a statement Wednesday denouncing Senator Chuck Schumer’s comments made during a rally in front of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The rally was an abortion rights rally coinciding with the Supreme Court hearing oral arguments in June Medical Services v. Russo. Schumer called out Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, stating “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

Roberts said that “threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous.” He proceeded to emphasize that the justices will continue to do their jobs no matter what threats exist against them.

Schumer issued an apology Thursday. He said that he should not have used the words he did and that what he intended to say was that there would be political consequences for the Senate Republicans and justices who take away a woman’s right to chose.
