Oklahoma House approves bill that would suspend medical license of doctors who perform abortions

The Oklahoma House of Representatives approved a bill Thursday that would suspend the medical license of any doctors who perform abortions.

House Bill 1182 “directs the respective medical licensure boards to revoke the license of all allopathic or osteopathic physicians who perform an abortion in this state, unless necessary to save the life of the mother or to prevent a serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.”

The vote was cast down party lines 71-21, with a majority of Republicans in support. The bill was authored and introduced to the House by Representative Jim Olsen, a Republican, who stated that the goal of the bill was to eradicate abortion in the state of Oklahoma. He told his colleges, “This is our time to make history. We can do something today that we’ll be able to tell our grandchildren that we did something to stop this horrific slaughter.

The bill now heads to the Republican controlled Senate where it is likely to pass.
