DOJ announces new section of immigration office focused on denaturalization

The US Department of Justice announced a new section of the Office of Immigration Litigation Wednesday to focus on denaturalization cases. The goal of the office is to denaturalize people who get their citizenship through illegal means. They will focus on terrorists, sex offenders, war criminals, and “other fraudsters.”

Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt said, “The Denaturalization section will further the department’s efforts to pursue those who unlawfully obtain citizenship status and ensure they are held accountable for their fraudulent conduct” The creation of the section comes after the Office has found great success in denaturalization cases, in which they succeed 95 percent of the time.

The American Civil Liberties Union has responded claiming the Trump administration has filed three times more civil denaturalization cases than the eight prior administrations and saying it is all part of the president’s effort’s to create an environment of insecurity and fear.
