Trump administration releases new rule limiting legal immigration

The Trump administration released a regulation on Monday that could prevent a number of legal immigrants from entering the US.

Monday’s announcement represents as effort by the administration to limit legal immigration by creating stronger filters for incoming immigrants.

The rule specifies that green card and visa applicants could be turned down if they have low incomes and have used benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps and housing vouchers.

The stated purpose is to encourage “self-sufficiency” for potential immigrants and green card applicants. According to a White House statement regarding the matter, “Self-sufficiency has long been a basic principle of our Nation’s immigration laws that has enjoyed widespread support.”

The White House statements also specified the need for resource distribution among current citizens: “Large numbers of non-citizens and their families have taken advantage of our generous public benefits, limited resources that could otherwise go to vulnerable Americans.”

Several immigrant rights groups have promised to challenge the new regulation in court.
