New policy guidance on citizenship issued

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued policy guidance Wednesday to define “residence” in statutory provisions clarifying the distinction between a person residing in the US and just being physically present.

The policy guidance further rescinds previous guidance related to children of US Government Employees and military members stationed or employed outside the US. In the updated policy, the children are not considered to be “residing” in the US for the purpose of acquiring citizenship.

The policy guidance goes into effect on October 29, 2019.
