Trump signs executive order imposing sanctions on Iran

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order imposing sanctions on Iran, citing “aggressive behaviors by the Iranian regime in recent weeks.”

The sanctions block Iran’s leadership from access to the US financial system or any other assets in the US. The order also allows the Secretary of the Treasury to sanction anyone providing material support to the Iranian leadership. The drone attack last week and the regime’s announced plans to stockpile more enriched uranium are cited as the reasons for the sanctions.

Trump stated that this is a “strong and proportionate response to Iran’s increasingly provocative actions.” When asked what his response to Iran possibly reaching their uranium limits would be, Trump responded, “I won’t say what I’ll do, but I don’t think they should do it.”

Just before signing the order, Trump stated, “America is a peace-loving nation. We do not seek conflict with Iran or any other country. I look forward to the day when sanctions can be finally lifted and Iran can become a peaceful, prosperous, and productive nation.”
