Iran lawmakers approve bill labeling US forces as terrorists

Iran’s parliament approved a law Tuesday pronouncing the US Army’s Central Command (CENTCOM) a terrorist organization.

The bill was passed in reaction to the US labeling Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization earlier in April. That was the first time in US history that the US has recognized another country’s military as a terrorist organization. Tensions are also escalating due to the US ending sanction waivers for countries that import Iranian oil earlier this week.

The Iranian bill approved Tuesday calls for the Iranian government and the military to “take the necessary actions so as the US forces will not be able to use their power and facilities against the interests of Iran.” The bill also directs intelligence officers to provide lists of personnel, institutes, and organizations that support CENTCOM.

On Wednesday Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif spoke at the Asia Society in New York saying that he does not believe that US President Donald Trump wants a conflict between Iran and the US. However, Zarif criticized Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy on Iran as putting pressure on the Iranian people and not the government, describing that strategy as ineffective.

Zarif also warned that the members of the “B-team,” including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, National Security Adviser John Bolton, the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed, and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, do not have the same goals as Trump and are luring Trump into a “plot” that will costs trillions and create a greater disaster, provoking Iran into a conflict.
