Apple sued in class action lawsuit over false alerts

A California consumer on Monday filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, alleging false positive notifications.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple pushed a modification through an update for some iPhones and that this modification altered the use of the phones. After the update, affected customers received a message that stated, “this accessory may not be supported” when they attempted to charge their phones with the Apple charger—an accessory included with the phone at time of purchase. Because chargers are essential to the use of the iPhone, this notification forced customers to purchase new chargers and/or new phones at increased prices.

The claim further states that customers were not informed at time of purchase that their phones would eventually reject the chargers, and these customers also did not provide their consent for the modification responsible for the disruption.

Specifically, Apple is accused of false advertising; unfair, fraudulent and unlawful competition practices; and consumer legal remedies. This class action seeks to represent “All United States Citizens who, between the applicable statute of limitations and the present, purchased a Class Product which included an Apple Charger.”
