West Virginia justice resigns ahead of special legislative session for his removal

West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Allen Loughry’s resignation will take affect at the close of business Monday.

Loughry submitted his resignation to West Virginia Governor Jim Justice who accepted it effective Monday. The governor had convened a special session of the state legislature set for Tuesday to consider Loughry’s removal as one of the four Supreme Court justices who had been impeached following allegations of corruption and misuse of government funds. Loughry had been convicted last month of several federal criminal charges including mail fraud and wire fraud as well as crimes surrounding the use of state vehicles.

After accepting his resignation, the governor canceled the special legislative session as it would no longer be necessary.
