UN human rights envoy calls for delay of Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar called Tuesday for a delay in the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

The governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh had originally agreed that the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh would be repatriated to Rakhine State in Myanmar later this month.

The Special Rapporteur, Yanghee Lee, said that the government of Myanmar showed no intentions of preventing further persecution of the Rohingya.

I have not seen any evidence of the Government of Myanmar taking concrete and visible measures to create an environment where the Rohingya can return to their place of origin and live there safely with their fundamental rights guaranteed.

Nearly 700,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh to avoid violence and hostility in their home state. Many organizations and governments have called the atrocities a genocide.

The government of Myanmar is in the process of developing the land vacated by the fleeing Rohingya, but the Special Rapporteur argues this is not enough to prove the Rohingya will be safe. “Living safely and in a dignified manner includes a right to citizenship, freedom of movement, and access to services, health, education, and livelihoods.”

The statement by the Special Rapporteur is one of many recent UN reports criticizing the government of Myanmar.
