Bangladesh tribunal sentences two war criminals to death

The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh on Monday sentenced two people to death for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

The two convicts, Liakat Ali and Aminul Islam, went into hiding after an arrest warrant was issued against them in May 2016 for allegedly aiding Pakistani troops and murdering over 100 people.

The sentence was passed down in absentia.

The three-judge tribunal led by Justice Md. Shahinur Islam wrote:

Since the convicted accused persons have been absconding the “sentence of death” as awarded above shall be executed after causing their arrest or when they surrender before the Tribunal, whichever is earlier.

Seven war criminals have been sentenced to death by the tribunal so far.
